Our Mission

Sierra Club has a long legacy of protecting America's public lands and special places.

We believe these lands should be held for and by everyone, providing opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, and come together to share experiences. Our work reaches from the most untouched national forests and vast western landscapes to the urban parks just down the street.

Why 2020?

We can stop the sixth mass extinction if we protect approximately 50% of the 846 ecoregions that provide habitat for all of Earth's biodiversity. That means finding leaders and organizations around the world willing to align exisiting efforts around protecting and interconnecting nature in the region.

What We Do

Sierra Club is doubling down in the fight to preserve wild places in the face of threats from fossil fuel extraction and climate disruption.

Our work embodies the Sierra Club’s motto of “explore, enjoy and protect.”

  1. Through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying, and legal action we’re working to increase access to the outdoors; to protect our lands, water and wildlife; and to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

As the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States, we amplifies the power of our 3.5+ million members and supporters to defend everyone’s right to a healthy world.

'We can’t protect our climate simply by saying ‘no’ to bad ideas. We must also shout ‘yes!’ to better ideas.'

- MICHAEL BRUNE, SIERRA CLUB EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
